All you need are a handful of pony beads and some durable cord and you'll see your little aquatic friend take shape, bead by bead. Rulers haven't always been marked with the standardized measurements we take for granted today. Early measurements were often based on parts of the human body, giving us units such as the foot, hand and cubit. As standardized systems developed, rulers made it possible to reproduce measurements much more reliably. Flexible tape measures came later, making it practical to measure fabric, bodies, curves and other things a rigid ruler couldn't easily handle. For crafters, having both within reach covers an amazing number of projects.

Make Her Your Own:Don't be afraid to experiment with different bead colors for your mermaid. For example, an Ariel style mermaid can be made using a red bead for her hair. Using different colors for her skin, top, body and tail colors would work well too. AB, glitter, transparent, pearl and other bead finishes can change her look too.
3. After finishing the pattern tie a double knot or surgeon's knot in the cords at the bottom and apply glue to secure.
4. Weave your wire or pipe cleaner through your beaded bug keychain to make it stiffer and hold it's shape. You probably only need to do this near the top of your mermaid.
(Seed beads or E beads can be used in place of pony beads to create smaller characters.)
