This irresistible little mouse is perfect for the animal lover in the family. Have fun creating this adorable beaded mouse keychain with a little cord and pony beads. With its tiny ears, little nose and long tail, this furry critter may be quiet as a mouse, but it has plenty of personality. Make your mouse in your favorite colors and create a cute little companion for keys, bags or backpacks.
This pony bead mouse makes a fun handmade gift for mouse lovers and anyone who enjoys cute animal crafts. It also makes a great summer camp, classroom or group project, can be made in school colors for a mouse mascot, or made in quantity for school, club and group fundraisers.
If you make this project please share your photos with us. With your permission we'll add it to the page and credit it to you.
Some craft patterns have been around long enough that their original colors and materials may look dated. Often it's the presentation, not the project. Today's colors, finishes and materials can give an older craft an entirely new personality.
You will need one connector such as a
Lanyard hook, or any type of
Key Ring.
Next, you will need 2 yards of cord for our mouse. There are lots of different types of cords you can use. We prefer a cord that is 1mm to 2mm thick because it helps your keychain critter keep it's shape better. Alternatively, you can use a thinner cord and weave a little wire or a pipe cleaner into your keychain critter to help it keep it's shape that way. Either way works just fine but you can experiment with it to see which method you prefer.
One good option is
Suede Cord . Another good choice is
Monofilament Cord or
2mm metallic cording. Other good choices would be jute or hemp cord, leather necklace cord, rattail cord, shoelaces, ribbon, paracord, or a strong jewelry cord like tigertail.
You will need
3 - Pink Pony Beads (or the color of your choice).
2 - Black Pony Beads for the eyes
82 - Gray Pony Beads (or the color of your choice).
Optional: For a stiffer critter you can include a little wire or a pipe cleaner with your cord to help keep it's shape
Beading Wire or
Pipe Cleaners

3. After finishing the pattern tie a double knot in the cords at the bottom and apply tacky glue to secure.
4. Make your mouse's tail as long or as short as you wish. We did ours with 10 beads. If you want a longer tail don't forget to add them to your bead count when purchasing your beads.
5. Weave your wire or pipe cleaner through your beaded bug keychain to make it stiffer and hold it's shape.
(Seed beads or E beads can be used in place of pony beads to create smaller characters.)
The illustration below uses red and blue to show you how each cord side is woven into the beads. Your cord, of course, will be the same color.
