Rulers haven't always been marked with the standardized measurements we take for granted today. Early measurements were often based on parts of the human body, giving us units such as the foot, hand and cubit. As standardized systems developed, rulers made it possible to reproduce measurements much more reliably. Flexible tape measures came later, making it practical to measure fabric, bodies, curves and other things a rigid ruler couldn't easily handle. For crafters, having both within reach covers an amazing number of projects.

2 yds - Cording
There are lots of different types of cord you can use for your DIY Halloween Witch. I usually use a cord about 1 1/2mm to 2mm thick because it helps your witch keychain keep its shape. Alternatively, you can use a thinner cord and weave a little wire or a pipe cleaner into your beaded witch for extra support. Either method works, so experiment to see which you prefer.

1. Thread your cord or lacing through the key ring or lanyard hook. Find the halfway point so you have two cords of about the same length hanging from the connector. Thread both cord ends through the first bead from the same side of the bead.
2. Using the bead diagram for the witch keychain below, continue weaving the rows of beads. Pass one cord through the next row of beads, then pass the other cord through the same beads from the opposite direction as shown in the illustration. Pull both cords until the new row rests against the previous one.
Continue following the diagram, adding one row at a time to form your witch's pointed hat, hair, face, dress, and feet.
The diagram below shows how the two ends of the cord are threaded through the beads to make your Halloween witch pony bead keychain. The red and blue lines help you follow each cord as it passes through the beads. Click the diagram to open a larger version in a new window whenever you need a closer look.

3. When you've finished the last row of your witch's feet, the two cord ends will be on opposite sides. Thread one cord back through the previous row so that both cord ends come out on the same side. Tie the two cord ends together using a double knot or surgeon's knot. Apply a little glue to the knot to prevent it from coming untied. Once the glue has dried, trim the excess cord.
You can also try making this witch pattern with smaller beads, such as seed beads or E beads, to create a little Halloween charm or jewelry pendant.
